Freddie Felstead and the Whitmore Affair
London, 1991. Freddie Felstead has been sent to a respectable City firm to look at some software that is "not quite right". His journalist friend Charlotte Ashworth receives an anonymous fax that says something at a respectable but unnamed City firm is not right at all. This unlikely coincidence leads Freddie and Charlotte to investigate shifting numbers, overly charming building contractors and distinctive cufflinks to reveal a long-kept secret.

Meet the characters
Freddie Felstead
Twenty-two, suited every day of the week and never without an umbrella. Freddie reads a quarter of the Telegraph, checks the cricket, and notices rather more than he lets on. He would deny being a detective, politely of course.
Charlotte Ashworth
A junior journalist with a notebook, an opinion on restaurants and an exquisite eye for fashion. Often seen with a G&T in hand. More reckless than Freddie, and extremely good at reading people.
Aunt Bea
Freddie's great-aunt in Ealing. Eighty-five, two walking sticks, one cigarette holder and a Bank of England past. She finishes the Guardian crossword daily, and her wisdom arrives sideways, often as a story about the war.
Cosy, clever and comedic
The puzzles are about what was hidden, forged or forgotten. Nobody needs to be murdered for the stakes to feel real.
No corpse required
Silk ties, 1920s fashion, jazz on cassette and the Northern Line. The era is a choice, and Freddie and Charlotte make it every morning.
1990s London, dressed as 1920s
Dry, kind and gently ridiculous, in the tradition of Jeeves and Wooster, Tommy and Tuppence, and The Thursday Murder Club.
